For Imeneo we were joined by one of this country’s most experienced Handel Stage Directors, Tom Hawkes, who for many years worked with the London Handel Society. Imeneo could hardly have been a more marked contrast to Tamerlano, our previous production: from a dark opera seria with a tragic ending we moved to a much more light-hearted work with an almost comic ending.
Uniquely among Handel’s operas, Imeneo has only one set; our Stage Designer, Cameron Lawrence, devised a brilliant set that incorporated two levels, Greek columns, a temple, and a variety of entrances and exits and hiding places.
