With Floridante – even more clearly than with Flavio – we established another characteristic feature of CHO: a production of a Handel opera that has been very rarely performed since the eighteenth century. In fact our production of Floridante was only the third since the composer’s life-time, and – in the words of one reviewer – ‘unquestionably the best’. The star of our cast was the young Rosemary Joshua, in the seconda donna role of Rossane, who has since established herself as one of the greatest Handel operatic sopranos in the world.
