Alcina 1997

In choosing Alcina as our opera for 1997 I convinced myself that I had finally taken leave of my senses. Not only is it one of Handel’s most frequently performed operas – so comparisons with famous productions would be inevitable – but also it requires magical stage effects, a chorus of assorted animals, and dancers. In the event everyone rose to the challenges magnificently, and our production of Alcina was (in my opinion) one of our finest. The only easy job was casting the main roles. Three singers who had sung for CHO in the past joined us again: Ann Mackay in the title role, Kay Jordan as Morgana, and Catherine Griffiths as Ruggiero.
