Edmund Connolly

Edmund Connolly (baritone) was born in London and studied music at Robinson College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar; on graduating he joined the choir of St John's College for a year as a lay clerk. He then spent two years on the Post Diploma Vocal Training course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with David Pollard, where he worked with coaches including Iain Burnside, Paul Hamburger, and Sarah Walker; he gained both a Postgraduate Diploma and an MMus. Since 2004 he has been a music professor at the GSMD, and he was a member of the Glyndebourne Chorus for the 2006 festival.

Edmund's operatic roles include Don Giovanni (Pavilion Opera), Guglielmo (Opera UK, Skipton Camerata), Eugene Onegin (Birmingham Chamber Orchestra), Silvio (English Pocket Opera), and Harasta (British Youth Opera) as well as roles and understudies for companies including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English Touring Opera, Opera Brava, and Opera South. He has performed as a soloist in venues as diverse as King's College Chapel, Glyndebourne Opera House, the RAC club in St James's, and the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague.

Edmund's concert experience includes a recital for Oxford Lieder with Sholto Kynoch, in Queen's College Chapel, Oxford, and recitals of English and French song, as well as performances of Winterreise and Dichterliebe with John Reid in venues including the Fitzwilliam Museum and the chapels of Clare and Robinson Colleges in Cambridge. Edmund has performed most major oratorios, including Bach's St Matthew and St John Passions, Mass in B minor, and Magnificat, Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Creation, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, and Mendelssohn's Elijah. He was a Semi-Finalist in the 2004 Kathleen Ferrier Awards, and winner of the 2003 Thames Valley Young Musicians' Platform for young singers.
