Since its foundation in 1985, Cambridge Handel Opera has been committed to presenting Handel’s operas in productions that are accessible to the widest possible audience. The operas are sung in English, to a newly translated libretto that allows modern audiences to appreciate Handel’s genius to the full. Ticket prices are kept as low as possible, especially for young people and students. Our productions respect Handel’s intentions and expectations both musically and visually. They offer local people a rare chance to see fully-staged operas, and their high quality attracts large and appreciative audiences both from the local area and from further afield, including Handel enthusiasts and scholars from the U.K. and abroad.
By performing in English and offering low ticket prices we help to ensure that our productions are accessible to all. In addition, we provide invaluable opportunities to young singers to gain professional experience early in their careers. Talented instrumentalists at the University of Cambridge are given the rare opportunity of performing eighteenth-century opera in a historically informed style, thanks to the coaching that they receive from baroque specialists
Our Study Days, which are free and open to all, have been held since 2003 and have proved very popular.
